2. The Five AI Sourcing Matching Dimensions
Dimension 1: Title Semantic Mapping
What it does: The AI doesn't match your exact title. It maps your title to a "canonical role cluster" and then matches on the cluster.
Example: If a recruiter searches for "Data Engineer," the AI also surfaces candidates whose titles are:
- Analytics Engineer (mapped to Data Engineer cluster with Analytics specialization)
- Data Platform Engineer (mapped to Data Engineer cluster with Infra specialization)
- BI Developer (mapped if skills overlap sufficiently)
- Backend Engineer, Data (mapped if skills cluster is Data-adjacent)
What this means for you: Your exact title matters less than what skill cluster the AI assigns you to. If your title is "Software Engineer" but all your work is data infrastructure, the AI might still cluster you as Data Platform Engineer — or it might not. You can influence this by ensuring your headline and "About" section on LinkedIn contain the target cluster keywords.
Optimization strategy: Your LinkedIn headline should follow this format:
[Target Cluster Title] | [Core Specialty 1] · [Core Specialty 2] · [Core Specialty 3]
Example: Senior Data Engineer | Snowflake · dbt · GenAI Pipelines · Apache Iceberg
This gives the AI three signals to map you to the Data Engineer cluster, even if your current title at your company is "Software Engineer III."
Dimension 2: Skill Evidence Strength
What it does: This is similar to the ATS Skill Evidence Strength covered in Article 6, but the AI Sourcing version is stricter. LinkedIn Recruiter and Eightfold require skills to appear in your Work Experience section with contextual proof to count as "verified" for search matching.
The scoring:
- Skill appears only in "Skills" section: Strength 0, does not enter search matching
- Skill appears once in a job description, no context: Strength 1, enters matching at bottom quartile
- Skill appears with context and quantified outcome: Strength 3-5, enters matching at top quartile

Optimization strategy: Every skill you want to be found for must appear in at least one bullet in your Work Experience section, in a sentence that describes what you did with it and what happened as a result. A skill listed only in your Skills section is a ghost — it looks present to you, but it's invisible to AI sourcing.
Dimension 3: Company Tier Weighting
What it does: AI Sourcing tools assign every company in your work history a "tier score" based on engineering brand, selectivity, and size. This tier score becomes a multiplier on your overall search rank.

This is unfair but real. The algorithm assumes that passing a FAANG hiring bar is a strong quality signal.
Optimization strategy: If you have Tier 1-3 experience anywhere in your career, it needs to be immediately visible in your first 2-3 LinkedIn profile scrolls — headline, current position, or featured section. Don't bury Netflix in your third job entry from 2018. The AI tiers your entire profile based on the highest-tier company it finds.
Dimension 4: Engagement Signal
What it does: AI Sourcing tools track whether you're "actively engaged" on the platform. An active profile ranks higher than a dormant one — the algorithm assumes dormant profiles are less likely to respond to recruiter outreach.
Signals that boost engagement score:

- No activity (posts, comments, reactions) in 6+ months
Optimization strategy: This is the lowest-effort/highest-ROI fix. Update your LinkedIn profile at least once a quarter — even a minor edit (rewording a bullet, adding a new skill) resets the "last updated" timestamp. Engage with one post per week (a comment is enough). These small actions compound into a significantly higher search rank.

Optimization strategy: If you're targeting roles in a higher-cost market (SF, NYC) while living in a lower-cost area, list your location as "San Francisco Bay Area (Remote)" or "Open to Relocation: SF, NYC, Seattle" — giving the AI explicit permission to match you against those markets. Without this, the algorithm assumes you're anchored to your current location's comp band and deprioritizes you for higher-paying markets.
3. The LinkedIn Profile vs. Resume Distinction
Candidates often ask: "Should my LinkedIn profile match my resume exactly?"
The answer: mostly, but LinkedIn should be slightly broader.
Your resume is a precision instrument — tailored to one role, one company, one JD. Every bullet earns its place.
Your LinkedIn profile is a discovery surface — it needs to be found by recruiters searching for variations of your role across different companies and industries. This means:
- LinkedIn headline should be broader than your resume's one-line positioning (e.g., "Senior Data Engineer | Snowflake · dbt · GenAI · Streaming" covers 4 search vectors)
- LinkedIn "About" section should explicitly list the role variations you're open to ("Data Platform Engineer," "Analytics Engineer," "ML Infrastructure Engineer")
- LinkedIn Skills section should include adjacent skills you're competent in but wouldn't necessarily lead with on a tailored resume
The risk to manage: Don't list skills you can't back up. The AI will find you for those searches, but if a recruiter reaches out and you can't speak to the skill in an interview, you've burned a lead and trained the AI to deprioritize you for similar searches.
